On the Road

O

Two disciples of Jesus were on their way to Emmaus. ( Luke 24:13-35)  As they walked, they were talking about everything that had just happened to Jesus in the past couple of days and weeks.  Their minds were preoccupied by all the events.  Jesus was crucified by the Romans.  They hoped he was going to become King of Israel and would save them.  Instead he died on the cross.  Not understanding the scriptures and what was prophesied about his death on the cross, they could not comprehend what was happening.  In addition, the women came to Jesus’ disciples and said that Jesus was risen from the dead.  How could this be?  The body was not found in the tomb.  They were experiencing confusion, shock and grief.  They missed him and were feeling lost. They could not comprehend what was really happening.  Due to their confusion about all the events surrounding his death, they did not recognize who Jesus was when He began walking with them.  Even when Jesus was talking to them, they did not know who he was.

Often, when we go through stresses and difficulties we are so focused on our pain that we do not recognize Jesus is with us.  But in reality, Jesus is right beside us.  However, our attention is focused on what has happened so intensely that we may not recognize He is with us.  We are so lost in our concerns and thoughts that we are unable to see that Jesus has never left us.  He has always been right beside us.

Luke 24:28 tells us that when the disciples reached their destination, Jesus “indicated that He would have gone farther,” but the disciples strongly urged him to stay with them.  When they were having a meal together, Jesus took the bread, broke it and gave it to them.  This is when they recognized Him.  Jesus then disappeared from their side.
When we invite Jesus into our lives and spend time with Him, He brings peace and a sound mind.  In the midst of the mess, He shows the way. But, He will never force Himself on us.  He will open Himself up to us as much as we want.

The disciples were blessed to be with Jesus in person.  Today Jesus calls us blessed…

“…blessed are those who have not seen but yet believed.”

John 20:29

We do not see Him in person, but our God is with us.  He is here through His Spirit.  Today, everyone who calls upon Him can be saved.

Position of Jesus

When Jesus was walking with the disciples, He did not condemn or shame them.  He explained life and scripture.  Jesus doesn’t condemn you or me either. He is near to comfort, to explain, to help and to just be near and walk with us on our personal journey. Will we recognize Him?  Do we invite Him to be with us?  He is available.

After recognizing that the person with them was Jesus, the disciples could not stay where they were.  There was a change in their hearts.  They rushed back to the others to share about their encounter with Jesus.

Let’s never stop sharing what Jesus did in our hearts.  It will bring healing and hope to others.
